SDG 1 - NO POVERTY
Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) actively embraces this global goal of eradicating poverty in all its forms within the framework of sustainable development. As a university, we are determined to expand access to educational opportunities and establish an environment that does not pose an obstacle to the learning of students with limited economic means.
Our university implements a ‘lunch scholarship’ program specifically for financially disadvantaged students: A number of students, determined by the University Executive Board each academic year, are provided with the opportunity to benefit from free lunch. Furthermore, students with special statuses, such as national athletes, those with a disability of 40% or more, or relatives of martyrs/veterans, can be included in this aid without being subject to the announcement and evaluation process. (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/7551/1/burslar-ve-calisma-olanaklari)
Additionally, a model supporting both educational assistance and income generation is implemented: MAKÜ provides its students with part-time employment opportunities, thus offering them economic support. This contributes to breaking the cycle of poverty in the field of education. (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/7551/1/burslar-ve-calisma-olanaklari) The university’s 2024 Administrative Activity Report has been published, demonstrating a transparent institutional approach through publicly available data. (https://depo2.mehmetakif.edu.tr/storage/sgdb/contents/19670/47_19670_2025-05-30-07-37-22-312813_2-24-yili-idare-faaliyet-raporu.pdf)
In this context, MAKÜ took steps in 2024 to strengthen its support mechanisms, including scholarships, free dining hall services, and initiatives aimed at improving the economic conditions of students. Ensuring equal opportunities in education requires supporting students not only academically but also socially and economically. The university strives to implement the principle of ‘no one left behind’ with this vision.
In 2025, the goals are to extend the scope of these supports to a broader student group; develop collaborative models with local public institutions, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector; and make the application and utilization processes more visible through digital tracking systems.

SDG 2 - ZERO HUNGER
MAKÜ, with its expertise in animal husbandry, agriculture, and food technologies and its regional development mission, plays an active role in ending hunger, achieving food security, promoting sustainable agriculture practices, and establishing nutrition education. The university aims to increase food production, improve productivity, and support social well-being, especially by collaborating with producers in rural areas.
Throughout 2024, MAKÜ published the ‘Policy for Ensuring Sustainable Food Production on Campus’ document both within the campus and at the regional scale, promoted organic/local production, and mobilized agricultural areas while observing water and energy efficiency. (https://gs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/gs/74-form-2106-34890104-kampuesteki-gidanin-suerdueruelebilir-sekilde-yetistirilmesini-saglamaya-yoenelik-politika-1.pdf) This policy, which foresees reducing the environmental footprint, preserving biodiversity, and minimizing food waste, is directly linked to the university’s ‘food service’ and ‘local procurement’ processes.
Furthermore, MAKÜ organized HAYTEKFEST, a university-industry collaboration platform in the field of animal husbandry, agriculture, and food technologies (with themes such as smart agriculture practices and sustainable methods in animal husbandry), bringing together sector stakeholders and producers. This platform offers a significant opportunity to transition innovative projects to the field and increase efficiency in the production chain. (https://haytekfest.mehmetakif.edu.tr/faaliyet-alani) Through such events, the university aims to enhance the technical capacity of producers, make food systems more resilient, and contribute to the fight against regional hunger.
The university has also adopted a ‘healthy nutrition-friendly campus’ approach in its dining hall policies, publishing a policy that includes criteria such as menu diversity, hygiene, and the use of local-seasonal products. (https://gs.maku.edu.tr/upload/gs/74-form-2106-23958287-saglikli-beslenme-dostu-kampues-politikasi.pdf) Within this framework, ensuring students and staff have access to balanced and safe food and integrating on-campus nutrition processes with a sustainable agriculture-food approach are among the priorities.
With these multifaceted practices, MAKÜ targets the well-being of not only the students and academic community but also the producer communities and the regional agriculture-food ecosystem. Thus, it contributes to the ‘zero hunger’ goal both socially (at the producer-consumer level) and institutionally (on campus).
The main focus areas targeted by the university for the upcoming period are: deepening producer-university collaborations, popularizing innovative and local solutions in agriculture-food systems, increasing the use of local products on campus, and developing programs to raise nutrition awareness among students.

SDG 3 - GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

MAKÜ is committed to protecting and promoting the physical, mental, and social well-being of both its students and the wider community. Through its Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Health Sciences, and Vocational Schools of Health Services, the university collaborates with local and national health institutions to provide direct health services, public health education, and community-based care initiatives. MAKÜ’s Faculty of Dentistry continues to serve regional citizens through clinical treatments at the Application and Research Hospital, contributing significantly to oral and general health outcomes in the region. Furthermore, the Faculty of Health Sciences offers physical therapy and rehabilitation support for individuals in need, reinforcing the university’s mission to strengthen community well-being. In 2024, the university expanded its public health outreach through field visits conducted with the Provincial and District Health Directorates. During these visits, faculty members and midwifery students performed home-based screenings for local residents, including blood pressure, blood sugar, pulse measurements, and urinalysis, while also providing education on cancer awareness, obesity, hypertension, and healthy lifestyle practices. A comprehensive example of this model is reflected in previous rural outreach activities such as Gündoğdu Village field practice, a format that continued to be implemented in 2024 (https://tok.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/10714/1/gundogdu-koyunde-saha-uygulamasi). MAKÜ also strengthened health education activities throughout the year by delivering mentalhealth awareness programs, anti-addiction training sessions, and basic first aid courses aimed at both students and parents. Continuing its strong approach in fighting addiction, the university organized awareness seminars such as “Awareness Training in the Fight Against Addiction (Bağımlılıkla Mücadelede Farkındalık Eğitimi)” (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/10782/1/makude-bagimlikla-mucadelede-farkindalikartiyor) and collaborated with local authorities in trainings related to drug-abuse prevention in coordination with Burdur Provincial Police Directorate (https://mtmyo.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/685/1/burdur-il-emniyet-mudurlugubagimlilikla-mucadele-sunumu). In addition, hands-on first aid demonstrations and applied emergency scenario sessions were held at vocational schools (https://golhisarshmyo.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/12963/1/ebeveynlere-yonelik-temel-ilkyardim-farkindaligi) In recognition of the “World Day of Older Persons” MAKÜ once again focused on elderly support through awareness training and home visits aimed at enhancing elderly well-being and social inclusion (https://tok.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/11073/1/cavdir-meslek-yuksekokulundan-dunyayaslilar-gunu-etkinligi). Additionally, during Nursing Week, students participated in on-site health screenings to raise public health awareness (https://tok.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/10713/1/hemsirelik-haftasi-etkinligi). The university also enhanced social well-being and intergenerational support through congress and community-engagement activities (https://ihslc.mehmetakif.edu.tr/ , https://tok.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/11068/1/maku-yaslilik-arastirmalari-merkezindenanlamli-toplumsal-ka-tki). Additionally, MAKÜ’s Faculty of Health Sciences organized the I. Salda Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Symposium, emphasizing new approaches in rehabilitation sciences and strengthening professional networks (https://sbf.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/7999/1/i-salda-fizyoterapi-ve-rehabilit). Beyond academic events, the university implements home-care training programs through its Anti-Addiction Coordination, Occupational Health and Safety Coordination, Happiness Research Center, Social Contribution Coordination, Psychological Counseling and Guidance Center, and Aging Research Center. A key initiative continuing in 2024 includes the Burdur Province Welfare Map Project, which evaluates socio-economic and health indicators such as poverty, disability status, chronic disease prevalence, life satisfaction, and access to health services. On campus, MAKÜ provides preventive care and psychological support through its Family Health Center, staffed by physicians and nurses, while free psychological counseling and online appointment services remain available to students and staff (https://prg.mehmetakif.edu.tr/PsikolojikDanismanlik/KullaniciGirisi). Health promotion activities take place across campus facilities such as the MAKÜ Stadium, fitness center, swimming pool, and athletics complexes, which are open to both students and the public. Blood donation campaigns continue regularly in partnership with the Turkish Red Crescent, while the campus enforces smoke-free zones to foster a clean and healthy environment. Through these integrated academic, clinical, and community-based initiatives, MAKÜ maintains its commitment to improving population health, enhancing healthcare access, and strengthening community well-being. The university will continue expanding local outreach, supporting vulnerable groups, increasing digital health education tools, and advancing collaborative public-health initiatives aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 3.

SDG 4 - QUALITY EDUCATION

MAKÜ is strongly committed to advancing quality, accessible, and inclusive education in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG-4). In 2024, the university expanded academic innovation, strengthened digital learning systems, and enhanced student support initiatives to ensure equitable educational opportunities for all learners. MAKÜ aims not only for students to successfully complete their studies, but also to engage actively in learning processes and acquire contemporary skills that align with global workforce needs. Curriculum Innovation and Digital Transformation In continuation of its curriculum modernization efforts, MAKÜ further integrated digital tools and competency-based academic models across departments in 2024. Academic units strengthened interdisciplinary teaching structures to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation capacity. Building on previous advances in digital transformation, MAKÜ delivered several core courses through distance education during the 2024 Summer School period. Courses such as Atatürk’s Principles and History of Turkish Revolution I-II, Turkish Language I-II, and English I-II were offered online, increasing flexibility and educational accessibility for students regardless of geographical or time limitations (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/10820/1/2024- summer-school-announcement). Other courses continued face-to-face, providing a balanced hybrid educational model. The university also continued to develop structured digital content and academic assessment systems across faculties and vocational schools. A standardized 14-week instructional design process remained in effect, ensuring consistency, quality, and learning-outcome alignment across programs. Inclusive Education and Internationalization MAKÜ strengthened educational equity by expanding opportunities for disadvantaged and international students. For the 2024-2025 academic year, the university launched fully online international student applications, streamlining access for foreign candidates and widening institutional reach (https://www.mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/10846/1/2024-2025- academic-year-international-student-application-announcement-2024-2025-academic-yearinternational-students-applications). Additionally, the university continued the “guest-student” model during summer school, allowing students from other institutions to enroll in MAKÜ courses (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/10820/1/2024-summer-school-announcement). These efforts aim to support socio-economic diversity and promote equal learning opportunities. Student Support Systems and Feedback Mechanisms MAKÜ reinforced student support systems through academic advising, mentoring, psychological services, and skill-development programs. The Student Support Center (ÖDEMER) continued to operate as a direct communication platform, enabling students to send requests, suggestions, and complaints directly to the university administration. Submitted feedback is handled confidentially and forwarded to relevant units, promoting transparency and student-centered governance (https://odemer.mehmetakif.edu.tr/KullaniciGirisi.aspx). Personal and Professional Development Programs In 2024, MAKÜ also emphasized co-curricular development. The “MAKÜ Plus” program supported students’ academic achievement while encouraging personal growth, mentorship, and active campus engagement. Through this program, students receive guidance, participate in activities, and develop key life and career skills (https://www.mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/7229/neden-maku). Research and Innovation The university continued to provide institutional support for student-led projects, research initiatives, and entrepreneurship activities. Students participated in scientific symposiums, workshops, and interdisciplinary research communities, cultivating a research-driven academic environment and preparing graduates for careers in academia, industry, and public sectors. SDG 5 - GENDER EQUALITY

Gender equality is a core value of MAKÜ and the university promotes a campus environment where all students, faculty and administrative staff have equal opportunities regardless of gender. MAKÜ recognizes that fostering an inclusive atmosphere benefits individuals and the university community as a whole, enhancing academic achievement, innovation and social development. Policies and Initiatives MAKÜ has implemented policies to ensure fair and equal treatment in admissions, employment and academic opportunity. The university’s admissions process emphasises merit-based selection without regard to gender. Scholarships, awards and research grants are made accessible to all students, and the institution actively works to eliminate inequalities in access. In employment, MAKÜ’s recruitment practices are based on equal opportunity principles with a focus on building a diverse and inclusive academic and administrative staff. The university encourages women to apply for faculty and administrative positions, particularly in fields where gender imbalance has historically existed, such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Through these initiatives, MAKÜ aims to balance representation across academic and administrative positions and support women’s career development. Programs and Resources for Women’s Empowerment MAKÜ supports women’s leadership development via mentoring programs, training sessions, and professional development opportunities tailored for women in academia and administration. These programs are designed to build confidence, enhance professional skills and provide support for women aspiring to leadership roles. Female faculty and administrators are encouraged to pursue leadership opportunities and the university actively supports women’s orientation in traditionally male-dominated fields. A key project from 2024 is the vocational skills workshop for women victims of violence in Burdur Province: the initiative equips participating women with sewing and communication skills, strengthens socio-economic empowerment and supports their active participation in social life. (https://www.mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/6480/1/makuden-toplumsalkalkinmaya-ve-kadin-istihdamina-buyuk-destek). Promoting Gender Equality in Student Life MAKÜ monitors gender distribution, study duration and graduation status of students via its information system (https://kbys.mehmetakif.edu.tr/ogrenci/all) and ensures services and activities are carried out under equal conditions regardless of gender. The university provides a mechanism for anonymous feedback via the Student Support Center and the Presidential Communication Center (https://odemer.mehmetakif.edu.tr/). The university’s Women and Family Studies Application and Research Center organizes conferences, training and certificate programmes, symposia, panels, workshops and interviews to challenge gender roles, raise awareness of gender bias, and create an inclusive campus atmosphere. (https://kadinsorunlari.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/contents/1250). In 2024, MAKÜ increased its collaboration with local policy makers and non-governmental organizations to reinforce gender equality efforts at the community level. Academic Programs and Research on Gender Equality MAKÜ maintains an official Gender Equality Action Plan for 2023-2026 (https://depo2.mehmetakif.edu.tr//storage/maku/contents/9832/2024-06-26-06-34-13- 596330.pdf) and through its Women and Family Studies Center the university conducts research on issues particularly relevant to women and develops policies and practices for their empowerment. The center also identifies under-represented fields for women and supports women entrepreneurs via the Burdur Development Center. Key 2024 Developments • The vocational empowerment project for women victims of violence in Burdur Province launched in October 2024 is a flagship example of gender equality in action. • The university’s public announcement that it is “among advancing universities” in 2024 highlighted its progress in student engagement and project participation, which indirectly supports inclusive education and equal opportunity. (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/11099/1/maku-2024-yok-report-amongprogressing-universities-took-place). • The Women and Family Studies Center expanded its event portfolio in 2024 with additional workshops and seminars focused on gender equality awareness. Through policy implementation, empowerment programmes for women, inclusive student life initiatives, structured research and institutional action planning, MAKÜ advanced its efforts toward SDG 5 in 2024. The university remains committed to fostering gender-balanced leadership, eliminating barriers to women in all fields, supporting women’s socio-economic advancement and sustaining an inclusive campus culture.

SDG 6 - CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION

MAKÜ implemented inclusive and systematic practices in 2024 in the areas of access to clean water, hygiene infrastructure, and sustainable water management. Through the supply of safe drinking water, sanitation services, the use of water-saving technologies, and regular infrastructure maintenance, a healthy and safe living environment has been provided for students, academic staff, and the entire campus community. The university's sustainability approach was not limited to technical infrastructure but was also supported by work focused on awareness, ecological sensitization, and community engagement. In the scope of World Water Day 2024, a biodiversity exploration event was organized at Lake Yarışlı, where students had the opportunity for hands-on field observation in local water ecosystems (https://yaban.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/2572/1/maku-ogrencileri-dunya-sugunu-etkinligi-icin-yarisli-golunde-bulustu). Furthermore, the university elevated its sustainability approach to the level of institutional policy by enacting crucial official documents like the Water Pollution Control Policy and the Water Reuse Policy on November 5, 2024 (https://gs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/gs/74-form-2106-42405048-su-kirliligi-kontrolpolitikasi-1.pdf, https://gs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/gs/74-form-2106-74058495-suyunyeniden-kullanimi-politikasi-1.pdf). The planting of 816 saplings and the installation of smart irrigation systems on December 16, 2024 (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/11359/1/maku-kampusu-yesil-alanlarla-daha-daguzellesiyor) supported eco-friendly irrigation practices in the campus landscape. In 2024, MAKÜ participated in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for the first time, receiving 200 points in the Water Management category and increasing its visibility by documenting its global-scale water management capacity (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/haber/2567/burdur-mehmet-akif-ersoyueniversitesi-greenmetric-duenya-siralamasinda-ilk-katilimiyla-basari-elde-etti). Waste management and environmental awareness trainings were organized for students and the community (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/etkinlik/1348/waste-management-andenvironmental-awareness-training-), sustainability-themed online education programs were offered (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/icerik/2799/1315/training), and the "MAKÜ Climate Change Action Plan" was published, elevating the protection of water resources and adaptation processes to a strategic level (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/sustainability/109-form-2002-50437745-climate-action-plan.pdf). The university drew attention to the water-energy nexus through renewable energy awareness programs targeting youth (https://mmf.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/11091/1/); and shared its vision for energy-from-waste production, the waste-water relationship, and a green campus with the community through its academics in national media broadcasts (https://mmf.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/11089/1/). MAKÜ also continued to increase environmental knowledge production through its sustainability-themed academic publications. The university operates a biological wastewater treatment facility with a capacity of approximately 7,000 people per day, ensuring that effluent meets environmental discharge standards. Additionally, swimming pool systems employ a closed-loop filtration and recirculation mechanism, reducing potable water demand. Treated municipal water is supplied for domestic use across academic, administrative, and residential areas. These efforts align with MAKÜ’s water pollution control and water reuse policies, supporting a circular water management model. In this context, MAKÜ made a strong contribution to the SDG-6 targets in 2024 through reducing water consumption, environmental protection, raising sustainability awareness, and community education. The university plans to expand rainwater harvesting and gray water recycling, extend water consumption monitoring systems across the campus, and further increase student/staff participation in the upcoming period.

SDG 7 - AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY

MAKÜ has taken significant steps towards "energy efficiency" and "clean energy" goals on its campus. In 2024, the university adopted energy efficiency as a guiding standard for buildings across all campus areas and enacted the "Energy Efficiency Standards Policy for Renovations and New Constructions" on November 5, 2024. Under this policy, energy-friendly designs such as LED lighting, sensor-based systems, and natural lighting/ventilation became mandatory for new buildings (https://gs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/gs/74-form-2106-88587149-yenileme-ve-yeni-insaatlar-icin-enerji-verimliligi-standartlari-politikasi-1.pdf). Total electricity consumption in 2024 reached 11,594,272.51 kWh. Energy demand primarily arises from lighting, HVAC systems, laboratories, and administrative facilities. Consumption is tracked via a central automation and building management system, allowing for real-time monitoring and performance optimization. Infrastructure and laboratories related to renewable energy have also been developed in the academic education field. The "Energy Laboratory," established within the MAKÜ Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, was opened on December 11, 2024, providing students with practical experience in energy production, conversion, and efficiency (https://mmf.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/19911/enerji-laboratuvari). The university also took steps to increase carbon sinks as part of campus greening; it was announced on December 3, 2024, that 816 coniferous trees were planted on the campus grounds (along with automatic irrigation systems) (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/11359/1/maku-kampusu-yesil-alanlarla-daha-daguzellesiyor). A visible international achievement is reflected in the data from the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings on December 13, 2024, regarding its first participation. MAKÜ received 510 points in the "Energy and Climate Action" sub-category, globally demonstrating its progress in sustainable energy (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/haber/2567/burdurmehmet-akif-ersoy-ueniversitesi-greenmetric-duenya-siralamasinda-ilk-katilimiyla-basarielde-etti). In addition to energy efficiency, important steps have been taken towards clean energy sources. For example, according to studies conducted within the Renewable Energy Sources and Technologies Application and Research Center (YEKTAM), the university filed a patent application on May 29, 2024, for the invention titled "Cobalt Phthalocyanine-Derived Mesoporous Silica Nanomaterial and Production Method," which is aimed at high added-value production(https://tto.mehmetakif.edu.tr/icerik/3000/1040/maku-sentez). Furthermore, the university's official patent/utility model list includes many applications; for example, the TTO's "Patent/Utility Model" announcement page details applications from 2022 and 2023 (https://tto.mehmetakif.edu.tr/icerik/2752/1060/patentfaydali-model).

SDG 8 - DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

MAKÜ, the provision of robust and inclusive economic growth and decent work opportunities is adopted as a fundamental mission. As a university, academic and administrative staff salaries are determined by the state at the national level, and union rights are recognized, ensuring that no discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, or status occurs in staff salaries; all personnel have equal rights according to the relevant legislation (e.g., Civil Servants Law No. 657). The university has also published an "Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Policy" based on the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/sustainability/109-form-2001-36830628- equality-diversity-and-inclusion-policy-.pdf). MAKÜ not only offers theoretical education to its students but also supports their transition to the professional life through pre-graduation internships, practical training, and career-focused programs. For example, the program titled "MAKÜ Rapid Employment with Applied Education" aims to ensure students are ready for the business world upon graduation; the university website states that the employment rate is over 50% (https://www.mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/7231/maku-uygulamali-egitimle-hizli-istihdam). This practice directly contributes to the university's goals of increasing economic growth and employment. In addition to employment policies, MAKÜ emphasizes that all individuals-including women, disabled persons, international staff, and students-have equal working rights and that these rights are actively guaranteed. Employment announcements are made public, and candidates are selected either through a lottery certified by a notary or based on objective evaluation criteria; the university aims to ensure transparency and equality in its recruitment processes with this approach. A notable indicator for MAKÜ in 2024 is the occupancy rate in student intake. Almost all of the 7,418 student quotas for new registrations in the 2024-2025 academic year were filled; an occupancy rate of 100% was achieved in associate degree programs and 97.68% in undergraduate programs (https://www.mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/10951/1/theoccupancy-rate-of-the-factory-reached-99-percent). This demonstrates that the university is a preferred institution with potential in both education and employment. In conclusion, MAKÜ's equality-focused employment and education policies, mechanisms supporting students' transition to work life, non-discriminatory employment processes for staff, and inclusive institutional approaches implemented in 2024 are concrete indicators of its contribution to the SDG 8 targets. In the coming period, the university aims to establish datadriven performance monitoring systems to build upon these achievements, increase the graduate employment rate, and contribute more strongly to local economic growth.

SDG 9 - INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE

MAKÜ took concrete steps in 2024 around its Technology Development Zone (Technopark/Teknokent) and Technology Transfer Office (TTO) to accelerate universityindustry collaboration, facilitate the commercialization of research, and strengthen the entrepreneurship ecosystem. Throughout the year, the TTO provided practical capacity building to companies and students through incubation and training programs. On April 17, 2024, the "Workshop on Digital Technologies in Agriculture" brought together the sector and academia on topics such as digital agriculture, sensors, data security, and prototyping. The workshop, held under the umbrella of MAKÜ-BAKA Technopark, served as a bridge for the commercialization of agriculture and animal husbandry-focused technologies, bringing the regional specialization strategy to the field (https://tto.mehmetakif.edu.tr/). In the first quarter of the year, the TTO organized sequential training sessions on cybersecurity and product safety themes: the "Cyber Vatan Project Applied Penetration Testing Training" was launched in mid-February and completed on February 23, 2024, at the Animal Husbandry Technologies Incubation Center. These trainings contributed to students and entrepreneurs prototyping their products and hardening them in accordance with standards. In the same period, the "Futrelab Idea Marathon" and various grant/call information sessions were introduced to increase project production capacity. In December 2024, Standardization Trainings were held to update knowledge on national/international conformity assessment processes for products and procedures. All these events are documented with evidence and dates in the TTO's 2024 announcement flow (https://tto.mehmetakif.edu.tr/duyurular). A prominent example of company formation and commercialization in 2024 is the crowdfunding process entered by a biotechnology startup (Algaemade) located at MAKÜ-BAKA Technopark to scale up its Spirulina production capacity; according to the TTO announcement, the project, funded in the deep tech category, aimed for expansion into national/international markets. Such startup cases accelerate the transformation of university lab knowledge into regional economic value (https://tto.mehmetakif.edu.tr/icerik/2991/1040/MAK%C3%9C-Spirulina). On the infrastructure and governance side, the Ordinary General Assembly of MAKÜ-BAKA Technopark for 2024 was held on May 22, 2025, and the 2024 activity report was presented for evaluation; the meeting outputs included the balance sheet of projects executed throughout 2024 and investment plans for the next period. This record indicates that the 2024 calendar was institutionally closed and that the Technopark-TTO mechanism is regularly reported (https://www.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/12015/1/maku-baka-teknokentte-2024- yili-olagan-genel-kurulu-gerceklestirildi). The TTO's "2024 Activity Report" was also published on the institutional website (PDF access is listed on the page), and the year's trainings, invention applications, and support program activities are presented in an integrated manner in this report (https://tto.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/tto/54-form-2132-23124403-2024-yili-faaliyet-raporu.pdf). The incubation and spatial capacity of the ecosystem was expanded through MAKÜ-BAKA Technopark. The official Technopark and TTO pages confirm that offices, training, and meeting areas, especially the Animal Husbandry Technologies Incubation Center, are active, and that the TTO provides consultancy to researchers and companies on intellectual and industrial property, trademark/design applications, and up-to-date data modules (https://tto.mehmetakif.edu.tr/form/2139/1072/guencel-verilerimiz). Furthermore, the MAKÜBAKA Technology Development Zone is officially registered in the Ministry of Industry and Technology's TGB List, which demonstrates the zone's status under legislation and its establishment as a permanent platform for university-industry collaboration (https://teknopark.sanayi.gov.tr/Home/TgbListesi). Another line that strengthened field-sector interaction in 2024 was the increase in HAYTEK (Animal Husbandry Technologies) focused events and announcements. The event/news flow on HAYTEK channels for 2024 (e.g., participation in DevFest 2024, presence at Growtech Fair) indicates that innovation-focused student-academician-company meetings have become regular. This visibility nourished the specialization around agriculture-animal husbandry technologies, setting the stage for larger-scale events planned for 2025 (https://haytek.mehmetakif.edu.tr/haberler). In conclusion, through the TTO and Technopark backbone in 2024, MAKÜ has: (i) tightened its links with the sector with digital agriculture and deep technology priorities, (ii) expanded programs supporting qualified workforce production such as cybersecurity/standardization training, (iii) moved startups along the incubation-commercialization pipeline towards concrete funding and market readiness stages, and (iv) ensured corporate accountability and sustainable governance through activity reports and general assembly processes. This comprehensive effort made a measurable contribution to the resilient infrastructure, inclusive industrialization, and innovation goals of SDG 9 in 2024.

SDG 10 - REDUCED INEQUALITIES

MAKÜ has continued to adopt the principle of ensuring equal opportunities for every student as one of its fundamental policies, taking significant steps in 2024 to strengthen inclusive educational processes. To support socio-economically disadvantaged students, the university maintained its provision of scholarships, meal, and accommodation assistance, developing its practices to alleviate students' financial burdens. Notably, the "Student Work Program" preserved opportunities for students to work part-time on campus; this provided both economic support and encouraged the acquisition of professional experience (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/7551/burslarve-calisma-olanaklari). In terms of accommodation, the university's provision of affordable dormitory facilities and accessibility arrangements for disabled students continued in 2024, guaranteeing that all students benefit from safe and accessible lodging services (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/7552/barinma-imkanlari). MAKÜ upheld its zero-tolerance approach to discrimination within the framework of its Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Policy, continuing to implement necessary regulations to ensure all students and employees have equal conditions in social, academic, and cultural life (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/sustainability/109-form-2001-36830628-equality-diversity-and-inclusion-policy-.pdf). In 2024, international student admission processes were conducted through digital platforms, and the university expanded its welcome, guidance, and orientation programs to support the academic adjustment of foreign students. This practice contributed to MAKÜ’s growing multicultural structure, reinforcing cultural diversity and global citizenship awareness on campus (https://www.mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/10846/1/2024-2025-academic-yearinternational-student-application-announcement-2024-2025-academic-year-internationalstudents-applications). Furthermore, within the scope of MAKÜ's Regional Development Focused Specialization Program, educational access opportunities for students from rural areas were supported, encouraging both animal husbandry-focused specialization studies and projects aimed at empowering socio-economically disadvantaged groups (https://www.mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/10967/1/burdur-mehmet-akif-ersoy-universitesibolgesel-kalkinma-odakli-misyon-farklilasmasi-ve-ihtisaslasma-programindaki-performansi-ileust-sirada). Additionally, in 2024, students' active participation in social cohesion, social participation, and volunteering projects was supported; psychological counseling and guidance services, disabled support units, and health services were provided accessibly to all students (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/icerik/2793/1301/saglik-ve-refah) These comprehensive activities reinforce MAKÜ's commitment to providing an inclusive and equitable university environment and demonstrate full alignment with the SDG 10 targets. The practices implemented in 2024 further strengthened strategies towards building a higher education ecosystem based on equal opportunities. The university aims to continue developing the principles of social justice, accessibility, and inclusiveness in the upcoming period.

SDG 11 - SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES

MAKÜ continued its efforts in 2024, prioritizing the goal of being a sustainable, accessible, and community-open campus. The university’s Istiklal Campus continued to offer a wide range of social and cultural areas open to the public, including the library, sports facilities, conference halls, a shopping center (AVM), a hotel, walking paths, and green spaces. Although access is controlled by security services and camera systems, the campus was heavily used throughout the year by students, city residents, and visitors. MAKÜ Library continued to serve the local community and students in 2024, reinforcing its inclusive education approach with extensive study areas, 24/7 open halls, Braille and audio reading support for the visually impaired, individual study rooms, and access to scientific databases. The university's Lavanta Tepesi Hotel facility, sports complexes, swimming pool, and cultural event venues continued their operations, open to both students and the public, making a significant contribution to the city's social life. In terms of preserving cultural heritage, MAKÜ academicians continued their excavation works at the ancient cities of Kibyra and Kremna in 2024. These efforts supported the protection and promotion of Burdur's historical values and the strengthening of its culture-tourism potential. The university, which contributed to the restoration of traditional architectural examples like the Taş Oda Mansion, also contributed to the development of gastronomy and cultural tourism in Burdur. Concerts, theaters, exhibitions, academic conferences, and festivals organized on campus throughout the year were held open to the public, strengthening university-city interaction. In line with its sustainable campus strategies in 2024, MAKÜ continued its efforts to reduce carbon emissions, increase the use of renewable energy, develop rainwater harvesting infrastructure, and protect natural areas. Rainwater storage systems, energy-efficient lighting, and preparations for renewable energy were maintained in new buildings, while water-saving fixtures, sensor-based systems in existing structures, and drought-resistant plants in landscaping continued to be used. The university organized water and energy saving training sessions to raise awareness among staff and students, supporting environmental awareness and social responsibility projects through its sustainability coordination office and student clubs. MAKÜ continued to promote sustainable and inclusive transportation with bicycle paths, electric motorcycles, accessible transport options for the disabled, a pedestrian-first campus layout, and public transport connections. Ramps, guidance strips, special vehicle parking spaces, and accessible public transport solutions were implemented on campus for individuals with disabilities. Student dormitories continued to provide accommodation services to over 10,000 students in 2024, maintaining the principle of equal access with specially designed rooms for disabled students. In 2024, MAKÜ gained international recognition. For example, in the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking 2024, the university was ranked in the 601-800 band globally in the "Sustainable Cities and Communities" category, and rose to 31st place in Türkiye. This achievement demonstrates the university's progress in sustainability and climate action (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/10827/1/maku-the-impact-ranking-2024-in-theworlds-top-1000). In 2024, MAKÜ updated its campus infrastructure with sustainability criteria in line with its strategic plan goals, supporting the objectives of sustainable cities and communities through practices that are open to the public, support cultural and artistic production, preserve historical values, and strengthen environmental awareness. The university continues its role as a central hub that directly contributes to the social, cultural, and economic life of the city of Burdur.

SDG 12 - RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION

MAKÜ continues to implement sustainability principles by taking responsibility for its consumption and production processes across the campus. The dining services, canteens, and cafeterias affiliated with the university support the balanced nutrition of students and staff with new menus planned under the supervision of expert dietitians each month and tailored to caloric requirements. In 2024, a total of 21 on-campus canteens and cafeterias (including those in the İstiklal Campus) continued operations, and budget-friendly meal options were offered in restaurants within the campus Unipark AVM area in accordance with sustainable procurement criteria. The university also increased its responsibility regarding waste management and productionconsumption cycles in 2024. For example, as part of the Zero Waste Project aimed at reducing plastic use, the "Policy for the Prevention and Reduction of Plastic Waste" regulation was enacted on November 5, 2024. This policy aims to minimize the use of single-use plastics, substitute with recyclable materials, and ensure environmentally friendly conditions in the supply chain (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/sustainability/109-form-2001-72095389-surdurulebilir-satin-almatedarik-politikasi-.pdf). MAKÜ's waste management systems were actively implemented in 2024: containers for source separation were placed across the campus, and the "Temporary Waste Storage Area" and "Mobile Waste Collection Center" applications continued. Furthermore, 50 kg of plastic packaging used in faculty/dormitory canteens were made suitable for reuse, and parts removed from electronic devices like computers were reused, while remaining components were sent to a certified e-waste center. Updates were also made regarding sustainable procurement in 2024: In March 2024, the university revised its "Sustainable Procurement/Supply Policy" to integrate the use of ecofriendly products, low-carbon sourcing, and ethical business practices into its procurement processes (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/sustainability/109-form-2001-72095389-surdurulebilir-satin-almatedarik-politikasi-.pdf). Additionally, the total score of approximately 5235 points (including 1275 points for Waste Management) that MAKÜ received in its first participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, announced on December 13, 2024, indicates the university's progress in terms of its production-consumption cycle and waste management (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/haber/2567/burdur-mehmet-akif-ersoyueniversitesi-greenmetric-duenya-siralamasinda-ilk-katilimiyla-basari-elde-etti). In line with these practices, MAKÜ aims to reduce environmental impacts in consumption and production processes, widen circular economy approaches, and make resource utilization more efficient in 2024. In the upcoming period, the university plans to more systematically report on water-energy related savings, zero-waste applications, and sustainable procurement metrics, while increasing awareness efforts among campus stakeholders.

2024

SDG 13 - CLIMATE ACTION

MAKÜ has adopted an inclusive and strategic approach to combating climate change. In 2024, within the framework of sustainable governance, the university officially published its first "Sustainability and Climate Action Plan" and took concrete steps aimed at reducing its environmental footprint across the campus. The plan sets a target of reducing carbon emissions by 20% by 2050, with strategic areas including energy management, waste reduction, sustainable mobility, education, and community engagement (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/sustainability/109-form-2002-50437745-climate-action-plan.pdf). Innovative Practices and Infrastructure In 2024, MAKÜ accelerated efforts to create carbon sink areas on campus; for instance, on December 16, 2024, a total of 1,816 trees were planned to be planted in three different campus locations, and the first stage of planting 816 coniferous trees was completed. The irrigation systems were supported by automatic irrigation technologies, serving both water conservation and green infrastructure goals (https://www.mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/11359/1/makucampus-is-beautified-even-more-with-green-areas). Furthermore, infrastructure investments aimed at transitioning to renewable energy and enhancing energy efficiency across the campus were planned. Within this framework, projects titled "Energy Efficiency Practices" included implementing sensor-based lighting systems, lowcarbon material applications, and energy monitoring systems in new buildings. Education, Awareness, and Community Engagement MAKÜ expanded its training and community engagement programs in 2024 to create environmental awareness and increase climate literacy. Student clubs, in cooperation with the sustainability coordination office, organized climate change-themed seminars, workshops, and field activities. Additionally, through the university's "Certificate Program – Sustainability" module, students gained environmental management skills (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/icerik/2799/1315/sertifika-programi). Monitoring, Reporting, and Recognition In 2024, MAKÜ gained international recognition. Moreover, institutional quality processes were evaluated regarding the integration of climate actions into campus management, and the quality culture centered on sustainability was emphasized during the 5th Quality Commission meeting held on October 4, 2024 (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/11087/1/makude-2024-year-quality-processesevaluated-with-5th-quality-commission-meeting)

SDG 14 - LIFE BELOW WATER

MAKÜ has taken concrete steps at both the policy and activity levels to protect local wetlands and ensure the sustainability of life below water. Policy Framework The “Water Pollution Control Policy,” approved by the University Senate on November 5, 2024, has entered into force. This policy aims to minimize water pollution originating from university activities, improve water and wastewater management, and establish regular monitoring and inspection mechanisms (https://gs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/gs/74-form-2106-42405048-su-kirliligi-kontrol-politikasi-1.pdf). The “Water Reuse Policy,” approved on the same date, has been prepared to increase the reuse of greywater, rainwater, and wastewater across the campus, reduce reliance on fresh water, and develop the necessary infrastructure (https://gs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/gs/74-form-2106-74058495-suyun-yeniden-kullanimi-politikasi-1.pdf). Also published on November 5, 2024, the “Policy on Reducing the Impact of Invasive Species on Campuses” provides a framework for protecting natural ecosystems within the campus; it specifically focuses on the ecological balance of wetlands (https://gs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/gs/74-form-2106-17720580-kampueslerde-yabanci-tuerlerin-etkisini-azaltma-politikasi.pdf). These policies demonstrate MAKÜ's managerial commitment to the protection of life below water. Monitoring, education, and infrastructure investments for both on-campus and offcampus wetlands have been shaped within this framework. Activities and Field Applications On March 26, 2024, a "Biodiversity Discovery Event" was organized at Lake Yarışlı as part of “World Water Day” (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/haber/2048/duenya-suguenuende-makueden-anlamli-etkinlik-yarisli-goeluende-biyolojik-cesitlilik-kesfi-burdurmehmet-akif-ersoy-ueniversitesi-tarim-ve-orman-bakanligi-6-boelge-mueduerluegueisbirligiyle-duenya-su-guenue-kapsaminda-yarisli-goeluende-biyolojik-cesitlilik-etkinligiduezenledi-etkinlige-oegrenciler-ve-teknik-personel-katildi-suyun-ekosistemlerdeki-oenemivurgulandi). In this activity, the MAKÜ Wildlife Protection and Rehabilitation Center, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's 6th Regional Directorate, and students collaborated, sharing educational insights into the relationship between water and the ecosystem in the field. A news item published on December 16, 2024, mentioned a plan to plant 1,816 trees on the MAKÜ campus to create "carbon sinks." This practice is an activity that directly supports environmental integrity, specifically the land-water and water-ecosystem transition (https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/haber/2572/makue-kampuesue-yesil-alanlarladaha-da-guezellesiyor). The university's achievement of 200 points under the "Water Management" sub-heading in its first participation in the international sustainability measurement system, UI GreenMetric, indicates that the institution’s measurement and reporting mechanisms regarding aquatic ecosystems have been put into operation (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/11435/1/maku-greenmetric-dunya-siralamasina-hizlibir-giris-yapti).

SDG 15 - LIFE ON LAND

MAKÜ took significant policy steps and organized activities in 2024 to protect terrestrial ecosystems, support biodiversity, and promote environmental sustainability on and around its campus. Policy Focus The University reinforced its goal of equipping the campus area with green infrastructure through its 2024 policies. For example, the "Carbon Sink Area Creation Project" was initiated in cooperation with MAKÜ and the General Directorate of Combating Desertification and Erosion; a total of 1,816 trees are planned to be planted in three different regions of the campus (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/11359/1/maku-kampusu-yesil-alanlarla-dahada-guzellesiyor). Such policies have been a strategic step not only for campus aesthetics but also in terms of land degradation, desertification risk, and carbon management. Activities and Announcements According to an announcement dated December 3, 2024, 816 coniferous trees (spruce, cedar, cypress) were planted in the first stage on the university campus. This event was announced to the public and is supported by automatic irrigation systems within the campus (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/11359/1/maku-kampusu-yesil-alanlarla-daha-daguzellesiyor). The “The Importance of Biodiversity” event, organized on April 17, 2024, as part of Biologists’ Day, was conducted by the Biology Department of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; students and faculty members were educated on the protection of terrestrial habitats, species diversity, and the role of museums/collections (https://fef.mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/15276/1/2- 24biologists-day-the-importance-of-biodiversity-museums-and-introduction-of-hacettepeuniversity-biosphere-museum). The University also organized green area tours, habitat observations, and biodiversity panels on campus, which were open to students and academics. These activities aimed to increase social awareness regarding the protection of terrestrial life. Priority Areas and Goals In 2024, alongside green infrastructure work, the University launched campus-level applications against "desertification and land degradation." Planned work included creating new afforestation areas, using climate-compatible plant species in campus landscaping, and arranging existing open spaces to be harmonious with natural ecosystems. Furthermore, students were equipped with nature conservation awareness through biodiversity education.

SDG 16 - PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS

MAKÜ took significant steps in 2024 towards building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions. The university established a strong framework for transparency, participatory governance, and the upholding of ethical values for its students, staff, and stakeholders. Policy and Corporate Governance The university's official "Leadership, Governance, and Quality Policy" is directly related to the institution's mission, vision, and strategic plan. Governing board and senate decisions in 2024 were made in accordance with the principles of this policy, making the decision-making processes more open and systematic. For instance, with the senate decision dated January 9, 2024, the "Scientific Research Projects Commission Implementation Directive" was reorganized, increasing transparency in academic activities (https://gs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/form/1912/715/senato-kararlari-2024, https://gs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/gs/74-form-1912-31038453-09012024-senato-intkararlari.pdf). In the "5th Quality Commission Meeting" in 2024, the university rector emphasized leadership in quality processes and announced the successful execution of the "institutional accreditation" process. This indicates a strengthening of the institution's internal control, quality assurance, and management mechanisms (https://www.maku.edu.tr/tr/content/11087/1/makude-2024- yili-kalite-surecleri-5-kalite-komisyonu-toplantisi-ile-degerlendirildi). Participatory Decision-Making and Student Representation Regulations concerning student representation and bodies were made in 2024; for example, the "Student Senate Directive," which came into force on November 19, 2024, included provisions such as the electronic announcement of senate meetings, pre-sharing of the meeting agenda, and the accessibility of decision minutes (https://gs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/upload/gs/74-form-688-86063936-oegrenci-senatosu-yoenergesi.pdf). The section archiving the governing board's 2024 decisions contains decision numbers and dates, indicating that record-keeping and traceability are ensured in the decision processes (https://gs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/form/1911/716/yoenetim-kurulu-kararlari-2024). Ethics, Justice, and Institutional Strength MAKÜ acts in line with the principles of fair distribution of resources, academic integrity, and equality in administrative staff-student relations. Under the university's quality information management system portal, headings like "Our Quality Policies" and "Our Values & Focuses" are clearly specified, increasing the visibility of efforts to embed ethics and justice into the corporate culture (https://kbys.mehmetakif.edu.tr/). An approach of accountability to external stakeholders has also been adopted by the university; the public archiving of senate and governing board decisions, the regulation of student representative participation, and the institutional clarity are important indicators of transparency and integrity.

SDG 17 - PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS

Sustainable Development Goal 17 aims to strengthen global partnerships and promote the sharing of knowledge, technology, and resources. In line with this goal, MAKÜ expanded its cooperation networks at national and international levels in 2024, systematically strengthening its partnerships with stakeholders. International Collaborations In 2024, MAKÜ focused on academic and research collaborations with universities from various countries. The university successfully hosted the "3rd International Erasmus Staff Mobility Week" event, with participants from 12 different institutions across 21 countries. This event demonstrated MAKÜ's increased capacity for multi-national cooperation in exchange, teaching, and research (https://www.mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/10602/1/maku-internationalwelcomes-its-guests). Additionally, on May 28, 2024, MAKÜ initiated steps for cooperation with Prairie View A&M University in the USA on animal husbandry technologies. Preliminary protocols were signed in areas such as student and researcher exchange and joint project development (https://www.mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/10773/1/maku-livestock-for-internationalbusiness-cooperation-in-usa). National and Regional Partnerships With the call for the "International Cooperation Project in the Field of Animal Husbandry" dated March 12, 2024, MAKÜ aimed to increase collaboration with national and international stakeholders within the scope of its regional development-focused mission differentiation (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/tr/content/6365/1/uluslararasi-is-birligi-arttirma-hamlesihayvancilik-alaninda-yeni-proje-cagrisi). In the same year, the university emphasized the theme of "internationalization and multistakeholder partnership" in its corporate strategies, supporting joint work based on the supplyindustry-academia-city model. Reporting and Activities In 2024, MAKÜ made progress in the institutional monitoring and reporting of its sustainability activities. For instance, the university achieved rankings in international indices and made its collaborations toward SDG goals visible (https://mehmetakif.edu.tr/en/content/10827/1/maku-the-impact-ranking-2024-in-theworlds-top-1000, https://sustainability.mehmetakif.edu.tr/haber/2567/burdur-mehmet-akifersoy-ueniversitesi-greenmetric-duenya-siralamasinda-ilk-katilimiyla-basari-elde-etti).
